THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF SHARIA AND NATIONAL LAW
Sharia and national law, Legal systems in Muslim countries,
Between tradition, politics, and rule of law
Jan Michiel Otto
Based on the conclusions of the twelve country studies (Otto et al. 2006), the national legal systems of these Muslim countries can be divided according to the degree to which and the intensity with which sharia influences national law. The twelve countries that were studied can be divided into three categories: 1) mixed systems, 2) classical sharia systems, and 3) secular systems.
